Fall is settling in beautifully across Palm Beach County, and the next two weeks are a love letter to the season. Over the eleven days from September 29 through October 11, you can welcome back beloved rituals like Boca After Dark and the First Friday Art Walk, sip your way around the world at a brand-new festival in Mizner Park, meet neighbors at National Night Out in Delray Beach, and raise a stein at the 52nd annual Oktoberfest of The Palm Beaches. Meanwhile, the farmers markets are opening their winter seasons all around you, Clematis by Night keeps the waterfront glowing every Thursday, and a big October concert calendar starts to heat up. Whether you have lived here for years or you are quietly imagining what a move to South Florida could look like, here is exactly what is coming up in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and across Palm Beach County.

What's happening this week, September 29 through October 4?

Boca After Dark returns for its October through May run, the First Friday Art Walk fills Atlantic Avenue with an evening promenade, the West Palm Beach GreenMarket and the Lake Worth Beach market both open their winter seasons, and Downtown Delray Beach Restaurant Month says goodbye until next year.

Why does Palm Beach County work so well for empty nesters and retirees?

The question I hear most often from people considering a move to South Florida is a simple one: "Will I find my community here?" And the calendar answers it more honestly than any sales pitch ever could.

Consider everything in just these eleven days. You could sample 16 global pours at a brand-new festival in Mizner Park, toast fall at the 52nd annual Oktoberfest of The Palm Beaches, browse a juried craft fair at the fairgrounds, and dance to free live music on the West Palm Beach waterfront every Thursday. Along the way you could wander a farmers market with more than 130 vendors on Saturday morning, meet your neighbors at National Night Out, and take in an art walk that turns a whole downtown street into a candlelit gallery. That is not an unusual stretch. It is a perfectly ordinary week and a half in Palm Beach County in early October.

These are not tourist attractions. They are the fabric of a community built around connection, culture, and quality of life. For empty nesters making the decision to downsize and relocate, that fabric is everything. When you choose a home in South Florida, you are not just picking a floor plan or a zip code. You are choosing a place where it is genuinely easy to stay active, stay curious, and stay surrounded by people who share your enthusiasm for this chapter of life.

On the practical side, Palm Beach County continues to offer compelling advantages for retirees. Florida has no state income tax and no Social Security tax. The homestead exemption can reduce your taxable property value by up to $50,000. The Save Our Homes amendment caps annual assessment increases at 3 percent once you establish residency. Homeowners aged 65 and older with qualifying household incomes may be eligible for additional exemptions. Healthcare is excellent, with Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Delray Medical Center, and Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center all providing nationally recognized care close to home.

More than two dozen 55-plus communities across the county offer active, amenity-rich lifestyles with clubhouses, pools, fitness centers, pickleball courts, and social calendars of their own. And with the Brightline station in Boca Raton providing rail access to Miami and Orlando, getting anywhere you want to go is effortless.
