By Kristi Ramella | South Florida Downsizing Specialist

There is a magic in the transition from August to September in Palm Beach County. The heat takes on a softer, golden edge. The beaches feel like they belong to the locals again. The restaurant patios fill with the sound of conversation that is more relaxed, more intentional. And the event calendar does not just continue, it pivots into one of the most vibrant stretches of the year. From world-class concerts at iTHINK Amphitheatre to an entire month of culinary celebration along Atlantic Avenue, from a moonlit Sunset Stroll through a Japanese garden to a brand-new museum exhibition on Boca Raton's beach history, the next two weeks in Palm Beach County are packed with reasons to get out and enjoy this community. Whether you are a long-time resident or just starting to explore South Florida, here is exactly what is coming up.

What's happening this week, September 7 through 13?

Monday, September 7

Labor Day - beaches, parks, and outdoor spaces across Palm Beach County. This is the last big holiday of summer, and South Florida does it better than almost anywhere else. Red Reef Park in Boca Raton, Spanish River Park, and the Delray Beach Beachfront Promenade are all open and at their absolute best. Pack a cooler, bring a chair, and spend the afternoon with the sound of the Atlantic as your soundtrack. Parking fills early on holiday mornings, so arrive before 10 AM if you can. This is the kind of unhurried day that reminds you why people move here in the first place.

Note: Palm Beach County Library branches are closed for Labor Day. Tasty Tuesdays resumes tomorrow.

What about September 14 through 20?

The week after Labor Day is my favorite secret in Palm Beach County. The summer crowds have thinned. The seasonal residents have not yet returned. And the calendar is full of events that feel like they were designed just for the people who live here. This is the week when South Florida exhales and shows you who it really is.

Tuesday, September 15

Tasty Tuesdays at Sunset Cove Amphitheater - Boca Raton
5:00 PM to 8:30 PM at South County Regional Park, 20405 Amphitheater Cir, Boca Raton. Free admission. Another Tuesday, another evening of gourmet food trucks and live music under the South Florida sky. The rotating lineup means there is always something new to try.

Wednesday, September 16

A perfect midweek evening for something low-key. Consider an early dinner at one of the more than 50 restaurants participating in Downtown Delray Beach Restaurant Month, which runs all September long. Prix fixe menus, happy hour specials, and culinary events make this the best time of year to explore Delray's extraordinary dining scene. Then take a sunset stroll along the Delray Beach Beachfront Promenade. The public parking is easy to access on weeknights in September, and watching the sun slip below the horizon over the ocean is the kind of free, everyday luxury that South Florida residents never take for granted.

Thursday, September 17

Sunset Stroll - Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens, Delray Beach
5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at 4000 Morikami Park Rd, Delray Beach. $12 members, $15 non-members. This is one of the most beautiful events on the Palm Beach County calendar. The evening features live taiko drumming by Fushu Daiko, a cosplay fashion show, koto performances, bento box demonstrations, and Asian-inspired cuisine. As the sun sets over the gardens, the paper lanterns glow and the drums echo across the water. Bring a light jacket - the garden air cools beautifully as evening falls.

Why does Palm Beach County work so well for empty nesters and retirees?

The question I hear most often from people considering a move to South Florida is straightforward: "Will I find my community here?" And the calendar answers it more eloquently than I ever could in conversation.

In less than three weeks this summer, you could do full moon yoga on the lawn of a historic schoolhouse in Delray Beach, watch a major concert at one of the top amphitheaters in the Southeast, attend a candlelit string quartet performance in a historic church, explore a world-class art museum for free, browse over 90 vendors at a farmers market, and celebrate the end of summer with a Jimmy Buffett tribute on a town square with hundreds of neighbors you have not yet met. That is not an exceptional season. That is a normal late-summer stretch in Palm Beach County.

These are not tourist attractions. They are the fabric of a community built around connection, culture, and quality of life. And for empty nesters making the decision to downsize and relocate, that fabric is everything. When you choose a home in South Florida, you are not just picking a floor plan. You are choosing a lifestyle where you can be active, engaged, and surrounded by people who share your curiosity and your enthusiasm for this chapter of life.

On the practical side, Palm Beach County continues to offer compelling financial advantages for retirees. Florida has no state income tax and no Social Security tax. The homestead exemption can reduce your taxable property value by up to $50,000. The Save Our Homes amendment caps annual assessment increases at 3 percent once you establish residency. Homeowners aged 65 and older with qualifying household incomes may be eligible for additional exemptions. Healthcare is excellent, with Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Delray Medical Center, and Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center all providing nationally recognized care close to home.

More than two dozen 55-plus communities across the county offer active, amenity-rich lifestyles with clubhouses, pools, fitness centers, pickleball courts, and social calendars of their own. And with the Brightline station in Boca Raton providing rail access to Miami and Orlando, getting anywhere you want to go is effortless.

Thinking about making Palm Beach County your home?

If reading through this list stirs something in you, whether it is excitement, curiosity, or the quiet sense that this is the kind of life you have been waiting for, I want you to know that it is closer than you think. I know because I made the move myself, from Ohio to South Florida, carrying all the same questions and uncertainties you might be holding right now. And I have spent the last 25-plus years helping hundreds of families make the same transition.

The decision to downsize and relocate is one of the biggest life changes you will ever make. But it is also one of the most rewarding. The freedom, the community, the cultural richness, the daily access to beauty and connection, all of it is real and all of it is waiting for you here.

Whether you are just beginning to explore the idea of downsizing, you want to tour 55-plus communities in Boca Raton or Delray Beach, or you simply want someone who understands the process to walk you through the financial side of the decision, I am here for that conversation. No pressure. No sales pitch. Just honest, experienced guidance from someone who has walked this path more times than I can count.

Let's talk about your next chapter.
